Asian Games Rugby Sevens: Favourites Start Strong on Day One

The leading teams enjoyed successful starts on the opening day of rugby sevens at the Aichi–Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, with Hong Kong China, China, Japan, and Sri Lanka winning both of their men’s matches.

Great weather and an enthusiastic crowd created a lively atmosphere at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Rugby Field.

Defending men’s champions Hong Kong China defeated Uzbekistan and Malaysia, scoring 93 points without conceding. China also enjoyed a successful day, beating Malaysia 33–21 before recording a 50–0 victory over Uzbekistan.

Hosts Japan opened with a 38–0 win over Kazakhstan before overcoming Korea 24–14. Korea had earlier defeated Thailand 24–7, while Kazakhstan secured a 12–5 victory over Thailand.

Sri Lanka won both of their Pool C matches, defeating the Philippines 22–14 and Singapore 33–17. The UAE also remained unbeaten, following a 33–5 win over Singapore with a closely contested 17–17 draw against the Philippines.

In the women’s competition, Japan and Thailand each recorded two victories. Japan beat Singapore 36–5 and Kazakhstan 48–0, while Thailand defeated Kazakhstan 28–5 and Singapore 36–0.

Defending women’s champions China began their title defence with victories over Malaysia and India. Hong Kong China also made a winning start with a 33–7 victory over India.

Asia Rugby President Qais Al Dhalai said:

“The Asian Games are a proud occasion for rugby in our region, bringing our teams together on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages. It has been wonderful to see the players representing their countries with such passion and commitment, supported by an enthusiastic crowd here in Nagoya.

“This event showcases the talent within our member unions and gives us an opportunity to inspire the next generation. I wish all teams every success as they continue their journey towards the medal rounds.”

Pool matches continue on Friday, 2 October, followed by the men’s quarter-finals. The semi-finals and medal matches will take place on Saturday, 3 October, as the race for Asian Games gold continues in Nagoya.
