Hong Kong Qualify For World Rugby Junior Trophy 2018

16 December, 2017 in Hong Kong, News by Asia Rugby

In wintry conditions at Hong Kong Football Club, the Hong Kong U19’s triumphed over the junior tuskers 40-7 to win the Asia Rugby U19 Championship and with it, qualify as Asia’s representative in the World Rugby Junior Trophy 2018.

In what proved a tighter affair in the first half than all expected, Hong Kong took a slender 14-7 lead into the break with converted tries to Marcus Ramage and Max Denmark. Sri Lanka’s points came courtesy of fullback, Chamod Fernando.

However the floodgates opened early in the second half as Paul Altier scored in the first couple of minutes of the second half and as the Hong Kong side started to string a few more passes together, play a little more structured rugby and treasure the ball a lot more, further tries to Jay Cooke, Callum Tam and Alex Nisbet saw Hong Kong romp away to an easy victory.

Coupled with Hong Kong’s 38-7 victory last weekend in Colombo, the Stephen Dowse led side can now look forward to a welcome break before planning their preparations for next year’s stint at the World Rugby Junior Trophy next September.
