Hong Kong V Cook Islands

Repechage beckons for hosts Hong Kong

6 July, 2018 in Hong Kong, Rugby World Cup 2019, News by Asia Rugby

Hong Kong V Cook Islands, Hong Kong are set to take on the Cook Islands this weekend, with one foot already at the repechage for Rugby World Cup 2019.

Having recorded their first ever Top 3 title, Hong Kong progressed to meet the Cook Islands for a place in the repechage in November.

Last week they won the first leg 26-3 and, as long as they avoid a 23-point defeat at home, they will progress for a chance to take the 20th and last qualification spot at the World Cup next year in Japan.

Captain James Cunningham was pleased with their win away from home, a match that provided them with much needed experience if they progress.

“I was stoked to have got some decent points on the board in the first game, and to show some good physicality,” said Cunningham.

“It was just what we needed to get to the next round. It was the most physical game we’ve played in a while so it was good to get the win.

Japan Vs Hong Kong

“A few of our boys got a couple of shocks early on but it is what we need, especially if we progress as we will face more physical teams moving forward.

“We know how important the second leg is going to be, so to be on Hong Kong time throughout the trip away was important.

We just need to manage ourselves, and get back into our stride for the second leg.”

You can watch the match live on Asia Rugby’s Facebook page, with the match taking place at the Hong Kong Football Club on 7 July.
