Hong Kong v Japan Final

Japan strike gold in enthralling Asia Rugby Sevens Series

15 September, 2018 in AR7s, News by Asia Rugby

Japan won the first round of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series beating hosts Hong Kong in the final.

In an enthralling 14-minute encounter it was Japan who got off to a flying start with a try by Kameli Soejima.

Jose Seru double their lead which proved too much for a Hong Kong, with Japan bouncing back from their defeat in the Asian Games gold medal match Having recorded victory in the Hong Kong event, Japan will be aiming to continue their run of form in two weekend’s time in Korea.

“Thank you to all our supporters in the stands and on social media, we managed to get a win against Hong Kong in Hong Kong,  and that is big for us, ” said Soejima.

“It was a massive effort by the boys, we have Korea and Sri Lanka ahead  and we hope for similar support by our fans and performance from our boys.”

Elsewhere, Sri Lanka  finished third after winning 40-12 in the third place play-off against the Philippines.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, despite going behind to an early try to the Philippines it was Japan who booked their place in the final with Soejima again impressing, scoring two quick back-to-back tries to get Japan into their rhythm as they went on to win 36-5

In the second semi final Yiu Kam Shing scored his third of the tournament as hosts Hong Kong beat Sri Lanka to set up a repeat of the Asian Games final.
