Sri Lanka thrive in home sevens environment as semi finalists confirmed in Colombo #AR7s

13 October, 2018 in AR7s, News by Asia Rugby

Sri Lanka were one of four sides to maintain 100% records at the end of day one of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series in Colombo.

Having finished third in Hong Kong and sixth in Korea, Sri Lanka will be hoping to reach their first Cup final of the series, and their two victories will give them confidence on day two.

On his return to the Sri Lanka side for their home tournament Danushka Ranjan scored one of three tries of the day in their narrow 19-12 win over China, before the Tuskers defeated Chinese Taipei 43-0 with Kavin Dixon scoring twice.

“I feel very good to be back playing for Sri Lanka and I hope tomorrow we play even better,” said Ranjan.

“Especially our first game against Hong Kong, this will be tough but it is a great opportunity for us to play at home.

“We finished sixth in Korea unfortunately so we want to do better here. Our defense will be important. We have some big guys and against Hong Kong we need this to go well.”

With Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines also winning both of their two pool matches the semi finalists are confirmed, but who meets who will be decided on day two as Japan meet the Philippines and the hosts face Hong Kong in the pool deciders.

Elsewhere Masahiro Nakano scored a hat-trick for Japan in their win over Malaysia before adding Japan’s fifth try of six in a 40-0 win over Korea.

Paul John’s Hong Kong scored a total of 118 points in their two matches, as they looked set to end the series on a high.

They first proved too strong for Chinese Taipei with Raef Morrison going one better than Nakano with no fewer than four tries in an impressive 71-5 win before Morrison scored his fifth try of the day and Jamie Hood scored 20 points in a 47-0 defeat of China.

The Philippines complete the semi final line-up after they added to their 34-5 win over Korea with a 24-19 victory over Malaysia thanks to tries from Justin Coveney (2), Mark Roberts and Timothy Bweheni.
