Men’s Asia Rugby Championship

Hong Kong aiming to bounce back in Malaysia with less mistakes

21 June, 2019 in Asia Rugby Championship by Asia Rugby

Despite collecting a second successive bonus point victory in this year’s Men’s Asia Rugby Championship, Hong Kong will be looking to improve their performance this weekend.

Having beaten Malaysia 30-24 on home soil, this week they travel to the Bukit Jalil National Stadium for their third match of the 2019 tournament.

A third successive bonus point win would set up a final round encounter with Korea and a chance to defend their title, but captain Jamie Tsang knows they need to improve this weekend.

“Malaysia were really good, credit to them, they put us under a lot of pressure and made us play right to the end,” said Tsang.

“We showed there that we can’t make as many mistakes as we did at this level. It very nearly cost us.

“Going forward the main thing for us will be to cut down our error count.”

In 2018 Hong Kong beat Malaysia 91-10 on home soil, showing that this match was a lot more competitive and could have gone either way.

12 months ago Malaysia also lost 67-8 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, but they will be buoyed by last week’s performance and out to record a first-ever win in the ARC.

Tsang, however, knows what his side need to do to ensure they are on the victorious side this weekend.

“We need to get back to our process and work a bit harder. We worked hard to get the ball but we need to work harder to keep it,” added Tsang.

“Our bench helped as Malaysia tired too. Our fresh legs came on and in the end I think that was what prevailed, but we want to be in a stronger position.”

The match can be streamed live on Asia Rugby’s Facebook page with the match due to start at 20:00 local time.
