Malaysia claim historic U18 Sevens title

18 August, 2019 in Asia Rugby U18 7s by Asia Rugby

Malaysia came from 10-0 down at half-time to record a 14-10 victory against hosts China to lift the Asia Rugby U18 Boys Sevens title in impressive fashion.

Having earlier beaten China 19-14 in pool play, Malaysia ensured they won the silverware and successfully defended their title despite trailing 10-0 at half-time.

Han Qin and Xiao Yang scored China’s first-half tries that had given the hosts a lead, but it was heartbreak for the hosts as Muhamad Faiq Aslah Mohd Sata and Suhairi Effendi Mohd Othman had their tries converted by Mohammad Fuad Mohd Saleh.

It ended an impressive weekend for Malaysia who were the only side to win all four of their pool matches, beating Hong Kong, Korea, Chinese Taipei as well as China in the process.

Chinese Taipei finished third over the weekend, beating Korea 43-0 with Chun-Huan Chang scoring four tries in the victory and two from Yi-Hung Lo.

Hong Kong finished fifth, recording just one win on day one (17-14 over Chinese Taipei) and failing to reach the final four
