QATAR NATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR ASIA RUGBY SEVENS TROPHY

22 February, 2017 in News by Asia Rugby

The Qatar National Rugby Sevens Men’s Squad for this year’s Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy at Aspire Rugby Stadium in Doha has been announced.

Qatar National Rugby Sevens Squad will participate at the ARST tournament that will be hosted by the Qatar Rugby Federation at Aspires Warm Up and Rugby Stadium on the weekend of 3 -4 March 2017.

The Qatar National Rugby Sevens Squad includes players from across the country (locals and expats) who have been selected after impressing at various tournaments, events and other opportunities during the last 12 months.

Selected players have each refined their skills at the Qatar Rugby Sevens, Dubai Sevens and XV’s Domestic League.  The team is set to face Philippines and Nepal on the opening day.

This biggest rugby event in the history of Qatar consists of only one leg making it even more important for teams to win the tournament. The winner of the ARST 2017 will be promoted with a chance at qualifying for the RWC7’s in San Francisco in 2018.

QRF President Yousef Al Kuwari congratulated all the players on their achievement and the hard work they had put in during the last 12 months.

Kuwari said, “We have a great team of dedicated men who sacrificed so much to get this far. We are a strong outfit with big powerful forwards and equally as big and fast out wide. I believe come finals time we will be there”.

“We lost a few vital players from last season but managed to balance their loss with quality players including Ford, Amit and Ward. They are big boys with plenty of hunger and rugby experience”.

“We also maintained veterans Al Malki, Al Muhannadi and Featherstone again who have played years of rugby and their experience at this level will be vital to the team. We will be expecting them to take charge and lead the way”.

Al Kuwari paid tribute to Asia Rugby for having the confidence in the QRF to take on such a challenge and thanked ARST partners and sponsors. “I wish to pay tribute to our partners and sponsors of the event in particular Asia Rugby, Aspire, Aspetar, The Coffee Brewer, Nandos, WOQOD, IEC, Nada and Amwaj.

The national squad will be coached by Fijian Usaia Biumaiwai and assisted by Qatari, Talal Mualli.
