Huang Scores Four As China Take U20 Title

5 August, 2017 in China, India, Womens Rugby, News, ARU20 Sevens Women by Asia Rugby

In the Asia Rugby U20 women’s competition, China were far too dominant across the two days as they put the sword to all challengers with a string of consistently high scoring victories. The standout player for China women was speedy winger Xiaohui Huang who capped off a fantastic tournament ending with 14 tries and a massive 70 points across the 2 days.

China, having seen off Thailand in their last match on day 1 came up against the only other unbeaten side, Hong Kong in the last match of the tournament and from the outset, looked too composed as Huang opened the scoring in the second minute of the match and continued an amazing final match as she scored a further 3 tries to complete the match with 4 tries and a personal tally in the ‘final’ of 20 points.

China team coach Jiale Ma revealed that her team had watched videos of Hong Kong’s play, but assigned the success to “minimal mistakes, good communication and holding on to possession”.

Thailand finished second in the round robin tournament after dispatching hosts, Hong Kong 36-12 in their last match and ensure that Hong Kong ensured a disappointing day 2.

In a replay of last year’s final, Thailand scored first through Wongwiwat, but Hong Kong struck back with a try to Grace Hood. But a yellow card to livewire Sisay Sombo followed by a second yellow card early in the second half put paid to any hopes as Thailand strolled to victory in the end over a tiring Hong Kong team who played the majority of the second half with six players.

Final Standings:

1.       China
2.       Thailand
3.       Hong Kong
4.       India
5.       Singapore
6.       Malaysia
7.       Uzbekistan
