Japan U17s Dominate Day One In Taiwan

10 September, 2017 in Japan, News by Asia Rugby

The Japan U17 Boys Sevens team look the front runners in booking a spot as Asia’s representative in the Youth Olympic Games 2018 following a dominant display of Sevens rugby in Tainan, Taiwan.

Japan started strongly in their first match versus Laos as they easily won, 49-0 and quickly dispatched of Philippines in their second match, 59-0 before a comprehensive display of all-out attacking rugby against the next best from Pool B, Thailand, saw Japan walk away with a 40-0 victory and maximum points from Day 1.

In Pool A, the equation is a lot more complicated for the 3 leading teams as firstly, Malaysia and hosts, Chinese Taipei drew their match 12-12 before Malaysia dispatched of Hong Kong, 33-0.

This sets up a mouth-watering proposition on Day 2 as Chinese Taipei host Hong Kong in what will prove a winner-takes-all scenario in securing a semi-final spot – and an opportunity to further their claim as champions.

But it will take a monumental effort for any team to overthrow Japan who look odds on favourite to take the title and book their trip to Buenos Aires next year.
